President of the Bundestag. Federal Minister of Finance of Germany from 2009-2017. Previously, he served as Federal Minister of the Interior (2005-2009). He was Deputy Chairman of the CDU/CSU parliamentary group in the German Bundestag (2002-2005), Federal Chairman and since then member of the CDU Presidium (1998-2000) and Chairman of the CDU/CSU parliamentary group in the German Bundestag (1991-2000). He also held the position of Federal Minister of the Interior (1989-1991) and of Federal Minister for Special Tasks and Head of the Federal Chancellery (1984-1989). He was also Chairman of the Association of European Border Regions (AEBR) (1979-1982). He holds a Doctorate in Law.
