Co-president of the International Resource Panel and co-president of the Club of Rome. He served as Dean of the Donald Bren School of Environmental Science and Management, University of California. He chaired the University of Kassel before serving as Director at the UN Centre for Science and Technology in New York. He was Director of the Institute for European Environment Policy in Bonn, Paris and London (1984-1991), Founder and President of the Institute for Climate, Environment and Energy in Wuppertal, Germany (1991-2000), member of the German Parliament (1998-2005). He graduated from the University of Freiburg, with a PhD in biology.
