Nickolay Mladenov

Director General a.i. of the Anwar Gargash Diplomatic Academy. He served as the UN Secretary General’s Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process between 2015 and 2020, where he focused on preventive diplomacy, helped avoid another war in Gaza and supported emerging Arab-Israeli ties. Prior to this appointment, he was Head of UNAMI and UN Special Representative for Iraq (2013-2015), brokering agreements, including on oil revenue sharing, between Baghdad and Erbil and helping the country form a national unity government in the aftermath of ISIL’s takeover of Mosul. For more than a decade Mr Mladenov was active in Bulgarian politics both in government and opposition. He served as Foreign Minister (2010 – 2013), and Defence Minister (2009-2010). In both positions he dealt with a multitude of international crises and promoted landmark reform legislation, while overseeing complex budget optimizations and institutional restructuring. Between 2007-2009 he was Member of the European Parliament. He also served as a Member of the Bulgarian Parliament (2001-2005) dealing with European Integration and Foreign Policy issues. He was a member of the EU Constitutional Convention.
