Robert M. Gates

Former U.S. Secretary of Defense, from December 2006 to July 2011 under Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama. Previously, he was President of Texas A&M University, the nation’s seventh largest university. He also served as Director of the CIA between 1991 and 1993 under George H.W. Bush. He joined the Central Intelligence Agency in 1966 and spent nearly 27 years as an intelligence professional. He received a doctorate in 1974 in Russian and Soviet history from Georgetown University in Washington, D.C.
